Farmers' market celebrates grand opening

Beamsville market continues to grow

Farmers' market celebrates grand opening. The Beamsville Farmers’ Market celebrated its grand opening Saturday. On hand for the ribbon cutting were, from left, Dwayne Williams, market steering committee co-chair; Cathy Simpson, market steering committee; John Shaw, chair of the Beamsville BIA; Sid Frere, federal Green Party candidate in Niagara West-Glanbrook; Steve Metelsky, market manager; Lincoln Coun. John Kralt, deputy mayor; Linda Arbuckle, representing Niagara West-Glanbrook MP Dean Allison; and Lincoln Coun. Dianne Rintjema, who also serves on the market steering committee. Submitted Photo
The Beamsville Farmers’ Market celebrated more than just Canada Day over the weekend.
On Saturday the market welcomed local politicians to participate in a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the grand opening of the market. The market, located on the property at Great Lakes Christian High School, 4875 King St. in Beamsville, opened last month and continues to grow, says market manager Steve Metelsky.
This coming Saturday, said Metelsky, the market will likely expand to a complement of 16 booths when all vendors are present.
“We’re excited to see it continue to grow,” said Metelsky, noting some of the new vendors include Jackie Troup, who will be offering flatbread pizzas ready to go, and a selection of Barb’s gluten-free pitas, cakes and cake mixes. A new crop of berries are also expected to be available fresh from local farmers’ fields this coming weekend.
The grand opening weekend also featured hourly draws, musical entertainment by Mike Lorenz, activities at the community booth by the Lincoln Public Library, and more.
The Beamsville Farmers’ Market will continue to run at Great Lakes every Saturday, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., through to the month of October.

Below you will find the first video in a series exploring what it takes to produce world class gerbera.

Newsletter #3 - Look Again at Varieties

Posted: January 12, 2011

Looking again at some of our existing varieties, and what makes them great, is very worthwhile, as they can get overlooked with all our new offerings coming to market.

  • CARAMBOLE-medium red/green centre. This variety has been in production for years for good reason. Carambole represents so much what you should expect in great Gerbera; bloom size, stem strength, vase life and resistance to marking
  • GOLDEN SERENA-silky burnt orange/deep black centre. Golden Serena has an elegance that’s hard to limit to a few words. The brilliant black centers draw focus and amplify stunning orange petals. If a gerbera could be called ‘sexy’, Golden Serena is it
  • RAFINEE- a reliable, readily available large soft pink gerbera. Great for wedding and bouquet work, Rafinee has a very good petal count, and does not mark easily
  • MESSAGE-soft yellow/dark centre. Message is a real beauty. Large head, with a softness of colour that gives a delicate feeling. Very strong stems and good petal strength make Message a real winner
  • PICOBELLO- dark pink/purple. Very beautiful gerbera with high petal count and resistance to marking. Picobello has very consistently-sized blooms and is well suited to all applications

Mini Gerbera are so very functional in all types of design work, and some of our varieties available in recent years are definitely here to stay. If you have not done so lately, take another look at these fantastic colours

  • CAFÉ- true cream colour mini. Café often pushes the size boundary between mini and large. Fantastic to work with for any application, Café is in increasing demand because of functionality, beauty, and performance
  • SIROCCO- great bright yellow, centers hinting red blush. Absolutely fantastic, consistent sized blooms with great stem length and strength, Sirocco is one of the best yellow minis we have ever produced
  • KIMSEY- soft pink. Like Carambole (above), Kimsey has been in production long term, as it exemplifies all that a gerbera should be. Period.
  • SURI- red. Suri has proven over the last year to be a wonderful red mini, lending itself greatly to bouquet work and as grower bunches. Expect to see this beauty for years to come.

Got any favourites from the past that you might like to see again? Make your desires known and we too will take a second look. Andy can be reached at ext. 23, and is available to answer your queries.

Newsletter #2 - New Varieties

Posted: January 11, 2011

Hola,

Take some time and look at our updated colour chart (if we missed you in our mailing, just call and we will send). In this production year, Cedarway is growing many fantastic new varieties, complimenting some of the great ones we have produced over the last year. Check out these new offerings, which are just a few of what’s now available;

  • Chief- a stunning new red/orange standard Gerbera. Large-bloomed with very good petal counts. Chief’s colour lends itself wonderfully to multipurpose use, as it will be able to work as either a red or orange in design work.
  • Souvenir- bicolour yellow/orange standard Gerbera. This is an improved version of the popular variety ‘Double Dutch’ we’ve offered in the past. Souvenir has very consistent, large blooms. This bicolour will work great in many applications; lively spring bouquets, dazzling summer arrangements, and bright fall centerpieces.
  • Lancaster- dark pink/purple standard Gerbera. Again, another variety with fantastic, consistent blooms. Lancaster has a high petal count, and resists marking, which makes it great for bouquet work, where strength is key.
  • Caprice- hot pink mini. Truly a great improvement over hot pink mini-gerbera of the past. Caprice has good stem strength, consistent blooms and good petal counts. Like most mini- gerbera, Caprice does great in bouquet work, or offered in multi-stem grower bunches
  • Accenti- bright orange mini-gerbera. Big blooms for a mini! Accenti is a great addition to our already strong line-up of orange minis. The petals fade to yellow at their tips, which really make these flowers ‘pop’ out in design work.

Cedarway has added many more new varieties other than those described above, so give them all a try. Contact Andy with your requests, and please remember, your feedback counts! Don’t forget our tried-and-tested varieties when ordering. If not part of your regular orders, give ‘Captiva” another try. This rich-yellow has so many possibilities in any type of design work. It is truly dazzling!
